UPDATE: Holy cow! I can't believe the response I've gotten for this piece, and I wanted to let you all know how appreciative I am. I am very honored for my first DD and proud that it came from a piece that took so much work to create! Thank you everyone!

Update 02-14-2011: Thank you to everyone for the support! At the VISCOM show this piece took 1st place in the figure category!

FINALLY Finished this massive drawing!
Will post a better picture after Feb. 4th. 2011

"He Who Is Man"
Graphite Pencil
27" x 40"
2011

This was a lot of work and fun! It demonstrates my current understanding and knowledge of the human form from observation.

Inspiration/credit:
Models from class for gestures
:iconmistervirtue: for changing the idea from humans creating a creature to a giant human form.
Goya, "The Colossus"[link] (now believed to be painted by an apprentice of Goya)
Mentor - gave me technique advice "make sure it doesn't lose the gestalt, don't get too caught up in the details, etc."

without their input this wouldn't be the picture it is today!

He Who Is Man by *Jatari is just awe-inspiring, ( Suggested by ~mistervirtue and Featured by $Moonbeam13 )

We trek upon the world and continue to expand, hoping to ensure our survival on this earth. Moving as one, capable of creating amazing structures to sustain life all under the hope that we can better ourselves and our many fellow inhabitants by hoping to become more than innovative, while unbeknown to us we are simultaneously causing just as much damage, if not more so than even the most powerful of storms or even the most destructive of cosmic forces. We have saved the weak within our ranks yet at the same time take much pleasure in torturing and killing the strong if they appear to oppose someone else in power. Our future is uncertain for this constant strain of destruction and creation, innovation and philosophical rejection appears to go on in an almost infinite pattern. Our constant combat and infighting has slowly waned at our mentalities and have made us rather suspicious and paranoid of one another's actions and motives. Rather than fighting against ourselves, we should be functioning together as one efficient being; moving toward our prospective futures rather than seeing how quickly it can be decimated before a would-be enemy would destroy its prospects right before our eyes. Together we can overcome any obstacle and conquer any issue that stands before us. We would trek without any loss of drive or purpose and make our mark upon history as the ones who truly are the building blocks of our societies and their problems rather than pointing fingers at ourselves. We are one, we are many...we are man...and we will never give up. He Who Is Man, created by the highly imaginative *Jatari, presents us with a surreal design style that does not fail to grasp your attention or your imagination. Its powerful message behind its design style is a powerful reminder of what our future could be and what our present should be.
Immediately as my eyes meet the portrait, I am immediately engrossed with the design. The design style and detailing on this piece is simply incredible. The bold use of shading in the image actually builds upon the many well-depicted fine lines on each and every single individual character within the composition as well as building upon the established light sources and gives these elements an excellent feeling of realistic lighting. These various intricacies in these singular elements are generated into the eye-popping spectacle of all of their bodies combined into a sentient being upon the canvas. The well detailed compositional elements in the background add even more depth to this piece. The nicely brushed clouds and waves of the oceans give a nice look to the piece as well as providing a more dynamic appearance to the landscape. These elements also do quite a sizable job of tensing the atmosphere and tone of the image, giving it a more solitary and tense atmosphere as if there is nothing that can stop this creature. One can almost imagine the vast scale of the being before them; the many beings comprising it remain silent and start to think as one. Its powerful steps crashing through the ocean waters as if they were nothing more than small puddles underneath its massive feet. You can feel the countless presences of the bodies as they move past you unwavering toward the horizon.

Possibly the most engaging part of the piece is the message behind it. The depiction of man merged together into one entity is a clear sign that society as a whole must come together in order to face the future and stand against it rather than remain disbanded from one another and slowly sink into the depths of the waters of fate. Together we could move forward though these problems and more efficiently solve said problems and more effectively aid our world rather than carelessly destroying it with experimentation and "shots in the dark." A true representation of the human spirit and what we can achieve when banded together.

With every single element of this piece doing excellently well and really presenting the overall potential of this artist...I feel as though you could take this to the next step. You should begin to refine the detailing of all of the elements to an even more convincing representation of your individual human subjects and touch up any that appear to be a bit smudged in comparison to the more sharper designs used (I am of course excluding the subjects within the environmental haze, I'm more specifically referring to any of the bodies in the foreground near the bottom of the page). You should try a bit of experimentation upon the scale of the piece. Show more than one entity if possible as that would truly create that much more of a scale on the piece and really make the piece feel larger than life in the eyes of the viewer. Experiment with more than one human body compilation to better view the capabilities behind the power of teamwork. There is so much more potential for expansion in this piece that one could spend weeks, months and even years thinking of various ideas for this piece. Keep experimenting and working on new work.

We are uncertain for what the future holds for humanity, or even what humanity can even do about it. One could think of a plan, one could even find a way to implement said idea to better help humanity in the end. However, unless we are all thinking together and hoping to utilize all of our ideas together and function as one, there will always be a slight chink in the armor of our futures, never able to move forth as we hope we can. He Who Is Man reminds us all that there is still hope for us all to move on. With its engrossing design, deep atmospheric tension and mood and incredible sense of detailing, it truly sets the bar for what the mind can produce in the ways of artwork as well as triggering the process of what we can do when we come together and manage to move as one.

Putting less detail on the many figures was a great idea. It focuses on the entire picture, instead of focusing on the little details. The entire picture is similar to that of a giant, an odd but deliberate choice. It is that of a man walking, but question is if it's a bold, or graceful walk. Who knows, but the effort put into this work is well detailed and the lighting is very bright giving it some degree of gravitas. The many various body positionss angles and perspectives indicates a great knowledge of the human form and is done with grace.

What a powerful and provocative piece of art! It must have taken days to draw all those human figures together like this! Somehow it reminds me of the Polynesian creator god "Tangaro," who took the form of a humanoid figure made up of many smaller humans, similar to what you have here. Also, I have this feeling that it represents mankind's struggle to be "on top," or more powerful than anyone else, and with all these people fighting to reach the top, they make this humanoid figure, and therefore make a representation of what humanity is. I don't know if that's what you had in mind when you made this or not, but whatever...it's a wonderful and original work of art.

I guess it is not surprising that Clive Barker made this image a favorite. When I saw the image, I thought at first he created in reference to one of his stories in Books of Blood, where humans pack themselves together to form colossi like this, in some Southeastern European country. That story still gives me heebie jeebies :D

Nice work, sir!
